The quick, simple and effective answer to Australia’s housing crisis is right on our doorstep

The quick, simple and effective answer to Australia’s housing crisis is right on our doorstep

A short plane ride from here, a city once crushed beneath the weight of skyrocketing rents and eye-watering property prices has found a solution to the type of housing crisis plaguing Australia’s major cities.

While bold and quite controversial, the fix was relatively simple, quickly implemented and highly effective, dramatically boosting housing supply in a short period of time.

As a result, rental prices came down and runaway home price growth stabilised. It’s the kind of scenario millions of Aussies would warmly welcome, given the dire state of housing across much of the country.

ROAD HOME: It’s time to stop ‘reacting’ to homelessness

It's time to stop 'reacting' to homelessness

Blue Door CEO says programs that prioritize and strategically pour resources into preventing homelessness come at a fraction of the cost.

As a preventive measure for our health, we are encouraged to visit our doctor for a yearly checkup. Similarly, we are encouraged to lock our doors and have proper lighting around our homes and vehicles to prevent crime.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said when we look at the housing and homelessness sector. We’ve traditionally put all our resources into ‘reacting’ to homelessness once it has occurred rather than prioritizing and strategically pouring resources into preventing homelessness.

Monday numbers: New reports tout ‘Housing First’ to support formerly imprisoned people

Graphic from ‘Housing First’ report

RESEARCH DATA: A graphic from a recent Prison Policy Initiative report that emphasizes the multiple crises that can be helped by expanding access to housing. The phrase, “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time” is often hurled at people who have criminal records.

But the “time” of a person’s punishment often extends beyond prison walls and follows a person home. People with criminal records who have paid their debt to society frequently have a hard time getting housing — which can make them less likely to stay out of prison, by perpetuating a revolving door of housing instability, poverty, addiction, arrest, imprisonment and release.

Australia needs to end the mythology of ‘mum and dad’ property investors. Landlords are not a cottage industry

Australia needs to end the mythology of ‘mum and dad’ property investors. Landlords are not a cottage industry

A majority of rental properties are owned by investors with multiple properties. And well-off investors enjoy the lion’s share of the tax benefits of policies such as negative gearing. Hardly a day passes without talk of “mum and dad” property investors.

It’s media shorthand for a rental market dominated by small operators rather than big institutions. But language shapes the way we think, and folksy terminology creates a false impression of Australia’s landlord class.

Measuring the placemaking impacts of housing-led regeneration

Valette Square in Salford

RESEARCH PAPER: As part of Homes England’s mission to drive regeneration and housing delivery, we have undertaken a comprehensive programme of research aimed at strengthening our approach to economic appraisal and the measurement of social value.

The first paper to be published as part of this research focuses on measuring the placemaking impacts of housing-led regeneration. This identifies the potential scale of wider benefits of a project beyond the development site itself, specifically to those living within surrounding communities.
