Immediate supports

Refuge Shelters

  • Brisbane City Council has opened a temporary Refuge Shelter for residents needing to leave their properties due to the cyclone impacts at the RNA Showgrounds, 600 Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills.
  • Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire Department, Queensland Ambulance Service and Council staff will be present at the shelters.

Homeless Shelters for people sleeping rough

There will be two 24-hour respite hubs supporting rough sleepers in our community during Cyclone Alfred:

  • Kurilpa Hall, 174 Boundary St West End (next to the library). Opens at 12pm Wednesday 5th of March for rough sleepers to take overnight stays. Micah Projects are leading this activation and working in partnership with Communify, QPS, DCHDE and services to assist people to access accommodation.
  • Emmanuel City Mission, 48 Peel St South Brisbane. Opens 7am Wednesday 5th of March and will remain open until 1pm Saturday 8th March.

 

Service Updates

We Care Professional Support

  • Wynnum/Manly Bayside region – Will stay open as long as it safe to travel. They will provide recovery assistance after cyclone Alfred via the WCPS op shop, with household items, clothing, free food, coffee etc.

Silky Oaks Children’s Haven

  • Community Programs (Family Care and Support Homeless program and Inspire Therapy and Outreach) at Silky Oaks Bayside Hub are closed Thursday 6/03 and Friday 7/03.
  • The housing team will have their phones and remote access from home to support existing clients during usual rostered hours for as long as it’s safe and appropriate to do so.

Wynnum/Manly Ward Office

  • The office will remain operational for the upcoming cyclone, however staff will work remotely for Thursday and Friday.
  • Councillor Givney and staff are working out in the community where possible and will continue to do until there is a direction from Council to cease work outside, and will resume once authorised by Council post the weather event.
  • Disruptions will occur should there be no power to charge phones and laptops.

 

Bayside Community Legal Service

  • Closed from 5/3 to 11/ 2025.
  • Staff monitoring phones and emails. Appointments for legal advice will resume to both in-person and over the phone from Tuesday.

  • Closed 7/3. Opening 10/3 pending weather conditions.
  • May be able to add services, for e.g. blankets, food etc – confirmation next week.

Change Futures

  • Staff will be working from home 6/3 – 7/3. Clients will be offered telehealth for any appointments that have been scheduled in person for Thursday and Friday or they can reschedule.
