Position Purpose:
The Shelter Worker plays a vital frontline role in supporting women and children accessing the Aurukun Women’s Shelter. This position is responsible for providing compassionate, culturally informed, and practical assistance to clients experiencing crisis, homelessness, or domestic and family violence. Working under the direction of the Shelter Coordinator, the Shelter Worker engages directly with clients to ensure their immediate safety, emotional wellbeing, and access to essential services.
The role delivers centre‑based support through daily client interactions, assistance with basic needs, and participation in structured programs and activities that promote healing, stability, and empowerment. Shelter Workers help maintain a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment, contribute to case support processes, and collaborate with internal staff and external service providers to ensure holistic care. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, reliability, and a commitment to supporting women and children with dignity and respect.
The role requires a genuine commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, community-controlled service delivery, and the wellbeing of children and families.
The Opportunity:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with women and children in crisis
- Understanding of domestic and family violence dynamics, trauma‑informed practice, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma
- Ability to follow structured processes including intake, risk screening, and safety planning under supervision
- Capacity to provide practical day‑to‑day support including transport, meals, personal care items, and assistance with appointments
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity, with a commitment to supporting First Nations women and children in a respectful and empowering way
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical conduct at all times
- Basic administrative and record‑keeping skills, including accurate case notes and incident reporting
- Ability to work collaboratively within a small team and follow direction from the Shelter Coordinator
