Affordable housing models for older people (65 years and over) are largely absent from recent federal and state government commitments to improve housing affordability and availability.
The Australian population is ageing.  2021 Census shows that the Australian population is ageing, continuing a long-running trend. Urgent action is needed so that all older people in Australia can access secure, affordable housing.
This research examines the policy and practice issues raised by the increasing demand for public housing among older Australians, and how public housing authorities (PHAs) can support older tenants to age well.It is both important and necessary to have frontline workers in the system (housing/property officers and tenancy practitioners) who are resourced and allowed to provide one-on-one support to address older people’s needs and issues.
Research shows that most older women who are homeless have never been homeless before. In fact, many don’t self-identify as experiencing homelessness, as they view homelessness as the stereotypical image of a man sleeping rough.
Liz undertakes a mapping research effort. This report explores the issue of housing for older single women on low incomes is a wicked problem with skeins of complexity, barriers and constraints. Liz explores pockets of innovation, collaboration and experimentation in WA, Australia and the world. There is a call to action for us all to consider as this issues impacts the lives of an estimated 400,000 women over 55yrs in Australia

This study analyses current geographic mobility and downsizing behaviours among Australians aged over 55, and considers the barriers to, and consequences of downsizing. Retired Australians tend to retain high levels of housing wealth (rising to 49% of assets for homeowners aged 75+) and most choose not to downsize, either by moving to a smaller dwelling or a less-expensive home.
