Abstract

Homelessness among people with mental illness is a prevalent and persisting problem.

This Review examines the intersection between mental illness and homelessness in high-income countries, including prevalence rates and changes over time, the harmful effects of homelessness, and evidence-based health and housing interventions for homeless people with mental illness. Special populations and their support needs are also highlighted.

Throughout this Review, policy and service implementation failures that have precipitated and perpetuated homelessness among people with mental illness are discussed, and policy and practice priorities critical to reducing homelessness and improving health outcomes in this population are proposed.
