The power of interruptions (Editorial)

Abstract

In January 2023, Rechelle Brookes, Jemima Cummins and Linda Wang, two recent graduates and one current student from the Master of Urban Planning at the University of Melbourne, Australia where I teach, published an article in the Planning Institute of Australia newsletter Planning News titled “The Culture of Housing: In Conversation.”

Writing amidst a housing crisis that is locking out many people from accessing housing, they share with their readers how they are grappling with a challenge unique to their generation of planners: planning a city they themselves cannot afford to live in. In their comment piece, Brookes et al. reflect on their dual experience of being both professional planners and renters in an increasingly unaffordable housing market.
