Preservationist planning broadly describes planning instruments that purport to preserve physical qualities of neighbourhoods by preventing demolition of historic dwellings. Here, we analyse land use conversion of almost 6000 lots in Brisbane, Australia, to understand if, and how, preservationist planning impacts the built environment.

The current housing and homelessness crisis impacting all Australian states and territories is highlighting the complex range of social, economic and environmental factors impacting families at risk of, or experiencing homelessness. The research argues for an alternative critical social work and human rights approach to housing and homelessness and that more policy attention and research needs to be directed towards supporting families.

Nordic and international research recognises the vulnerabilities and often poor outcomes for care leavers. However, their interrelationship with housing or homelessness as a specific outcome of concern is not well established. In this article we provide an overview of Norwegian and Australian studies to highlight the emerging research in this area and applicability to the Nordic context.

The involvement of people with lived experience is broadly recognised as beneficial, and possibly essential, to effective service and policy planning. However, in the field of homelessness service delivery, this has not been thoroughly researched. This study found that the homelessness services appear to have actively aspired to meaningful service user participation, however tensions for policy and practice remain.

The Australian population is ageing. 2021 Census shows that the Australian population is ageing, continuing a long-running trend. Urgent action is needed so that all older people in Australia can access secure, affordable housing.

As this issue of Social Alternatives examining aspects of the national housing and homelessness crisis was being prepared for press the National Cabinet announced new policies agreed to by State, Territory and Commonwealth Governments aimed at ameliorating the escalating crisis in housing affordability and homelessness. This crisis has become a major political issue.

The social housing sector provides housing to some of society’s most vulnerable people, disproportionately housing people with disabilities and chronic health conditions, the aged and people unable to work. These groups are often more susceptible to health impacts from poor temperature conditions within their home.
